Beware of products sold on the internet under the name of "miracle"!

Dermatology Specialist Dr. Büşra Solak Esen told an AA correspondent that some diseases and problems can arise when the appropriate product is not selected for the skin type.

Esen stated that choosing the wrong moisturizer can lead to acne, while using products containing high levels of acid can lead to irritation. He also noted that products containing retinoic acid can cause an increase in skin blemishes when used during the day without sun protection.

Esen emphasized the importance of sun protection in the summer, stating that applying makeup over sunscreen does not harm the skin, but that they do not recommend daily use of multiple layers of concealer products.

Esen, noting that the iron oxide pigment contained in foundation and concealers provides partial protection from the sun, said, "Nevertheless, it's essential to reapply sunscreen every 2-3 hours. Spray or stick products can be preferred for refreshing your makeup without damaging it. However, spray products should not be inhaled while being applied."

Esen emphasized the need to be cautious about cosmetics and health products promoted as "miracle products" in advertisements, and continued:

No product is a miracle. Products purchased online or on social media can cause serious irritation and phototoxic reactions. Even the dermocosmetic products we recommend don't promise miracles. If fast results are expected, this can be achieved through device or needle procedures and should be done under the supervision of a specialist. If your skin is generally oily, it can be categorized as oily; if it's dry, it can be categorized as dry skin (oiled in the T-zone); and if your cheeks are dry, it can be categorized as combination skin. When choosing a product, it's crucial to check the ingredient list. It's important to define your goals. For example, acne-prone skin should choose non-comedogenic products. Active ingredients like retinoic acid, azelaic acid, and niacinamide can be beneficial. Sensitive skin should avoid perfume and alcohol.

Esen emphasized that a skin-appropriate cleansing foam, problem-focused serum, moisturizer, and regular sunscreen use are sufficient for a basic personal care routine. "Using highly acidic products repeatedly can lead to irritation and blemishes," she said. "Therefore, reading ingredients and choosing products consciously is crucial."

"There is definitely a need for filtering in the marketing cycle"

IT Specialist Osman Demircan drew attention to the lack of oversight in the marketing cycle of supplements, herbal products and skin care products that are promoted by well-known figures on social media and reach millions of people.

Pointing out that using the wrong product directly threatens human health, Demircan noted that social media influencers often do not question the products they advertise.

Demircan said, "There's definitely a need for filtering in this marketing cycle, but before filtering, the controls need to be much more stringent. Today, many influencers enter these businesses individually, making their own agreements, without questioning the product's authenticity, its authenticity, the company's position, its partners, or its capital, thinking, 'The only thing I'm questioning is the money I'll receive.' Unfortunately, after entering, many products can end up hurting many users."

Demircan stated that there is no authenticity filter on products sold online and warned citizens not to rely on videos when making online purchases.

Demircan emphasized that counterfeit or uncontrolled use of products can lead to fatal consequences, and stated that only physicians can distinguish the reliability of products.

Emphasizing that fake sellers can easily open stores on e-commerce sites, Demircan emphasized that this creates a chain reaction problem and that the lack of control in the sales process victimizes consumers.

Demircan stated that consumers should do research and be careful when shopping, adding:

Citizens should definitely investigate the company's history, distributorship, and Ministry of Health approvals. What we must remember is that we often give the supplements or other health products we buy to ourselves, our spouses, or our children. Therefore, we must contact the primary supplier to determine whether the company has a distributorship in Türkiye and whether they are authorized to sell those products. Influencers must also take responsibility when promoting products. They, too, must conduct thorough research before promoting or appearing in any product's commercial.

Those promoted as "miraculous products" on social media are causing harm

Dermatologist and Venereologist Dr. Cansu Irmak Ünlü also said that cosmetics and makeup promoted as "miraculous products" on social media are not suitable for everyone.

Ünlü, who pointed out that the wrong product can cause serious skin problems and financial losses, emphasized that many people use products without properly identifying their skin type, leading to visits to clinics with complaints such as acne, eczema and irritation.

Ünlü emphasized the need to be careful about products promoted on social media, saying, "Products that haven't been clinically tested can cause both financial and emotional harm in the long run. Not every shiny and expensive product is suitable for skin health."

When choosing a skin care product, it's important to pay attention to its dermatological approval, suitability for your skin type, and ingredient list. Ünlü advised those with sensitive skin to test the product on a small area before use. "Feelings like shine, tightness, or dryness observed an hour after cleansing can be a guide in understanding your skin type," he said. "However, hormonal changes and environmental factors can also affect skin type."

Ünlü noted that despite individual differences in daily routines, the basic approach is "cleansing, moisturizing, and sun protection," and that people with dermatological conditions should definitely seek expert advice.
